Attendance Declining, But Not In Ames
In the most recent issue of Basketball Times, former Ames Tribune sports editor John Akers wrote a story about Division I basketball attendance declining nationally since the 2007-08 season.
His article is backed up by factual information. In 2008, the average Division I college basketball game had 5,524 fans in attendance. Last year that average dropped to 5,014.
In Ames, that certainly isn’t the case. In 2007-08, Iowa State averaged 13,316 fans per game. While ISU’s numbers dropped slightly the next two seasons, it bounced back to 13,015 in Fred Hoiberg’s second season.
In 2013-14, that number rose to 14,192 and is almost certain to go up again this year.
Dejean-Jones On Draft Boards
While he is still yet to play his first game as a Cyclone, Bryce Dejean-Jones has earned the respect of one NBA Draft prognosticator.
NBADraft.net has Dejean-Jones going No. 41 to New York.
One thing that Dejean-Jones has going for him that many thought affected DeAndre Kane a year ago is his age. Dejean-Jones just turned 22 in late August, whereas Kane was 24 entering his senior season. That means Dejean-Jones had probably started his freshman year at USC before he turned 18, so he is relatively young for his class.
Former President Likes Cyclones
Former President Bill Clinton was in town this weekend and he had some nice things to say about the Cyclones. You can hear them here: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/videos/sports/college/iowa-state/basketball-mens/2014/11/01/18351717/?sf33257920=1
While certainly not a political endorsement in any way, always good to have former presidents talking about your program.
ISU Daily Hoops Preview Magazine
The Iowa State Daily is upping the ante on its college hoops preview magazine this year. The publication will be a magazine as opposed to the newspaper format of previous years. It will feature a ton of great feature stories and photos, including a Jameel McKay “wings” shot that will replicate the old Michael Jordan poster. Make sure you check it out when it hits shelves on Dec. 1.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
FoxSports.com national writer Reid Forgrave wrote a great piece on Fred Hoiberg. Enjoy the read: http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/story/home-is-where-iowa-state-coach-fred-hoiberg-s-heart-is-for-now-110414
